How to Improve Your Flash Photography

How to Improve Your Flash Photography Most people I know are against flash photography saying that the results look very unnatural, the photos are washed out and just bad in general. While I think there's some truth to that, and I always prefer shooting in available light with fast lenses, sometimes using a flash is inevitable. The best solution is obviously a separate unit because it gives you many more options, but you can definitely take some great pictures with your on camera flash as well, you just have to know how to use it properly. In this article I give you some on camera flash photography tips and techniques that will make your photos look better, and I also demonstrate these with some pictures. This is the original scene I'd like take a photo of: a cup and a box on a table. Let's try shooting it without a flash , only using available light in the kitchen. I'm using a 35mm f/1.8 lens with my camera set to Aperture Priori...

Street Photography Techniques

Street Photography Techniques When you're getting started the challenge is overcoming the fear of taking pictures of strangers. Since telephoto lenses are not normally used in street photography , how can you stand a few feet from your subject, put the camera to your eye, focus, and click the shutter without getting nervous? A good street photographer is not only fearful in the beginning (this is a good sign of being sensitive) but they also don't want to do anything which will change the how the subject is behaving. With practice, you can overcome your reluctance to photograph strangers as well as learn techniques which will help you get better candid shots. One word of caution - it can be addictive. After a while the street photographer will choose which seat has the best view in a restaurant, or which side of the street offers the best possibilities. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND MORAL ISSUES The first thing to accept is that you are invading the pri...

Introduction to Photography Studio Lighting

Introduction to Photography Studio Lighting I'm a professional photographer and work in my photography studio most days. So I'm very aware of how important it is to be able to use light effectively. The right lighting can bring out your subject's best features (and they will love you forever for making them look good). Bad lighting on someone just looks horrible. I want to share with you some of my experiences with studio lighting to save you all the trial and error that I've been through over the years. I'll refer to the subject you are lighting as 'the model' even though it may not be an actual model, I just mean whoever or whatever you are photographing. As I see it there are two distinct skill sets: 1) Using available light. This is all about arranging the model to make the most of lighting you can't control. For example, shooting outdoors. You can't move the sun around, but you can move the model and your posit...

Couple Photography - 7 Tips and Ideas

Couple Photography - 7 Tips and Ideas Now-a-days just about everyone has a camera of some sort. Here are some tips that will help you take great photos of couples. Tip #1 Photographing couples when they are sitting around chatting is a good way to get the natural side of anyone. Using your zoom from across a room with a fast aperture setting (sport setting) will help you fill the frame and separate them from their surroundings. Tip #2 Kneeling down or standing on something higher than the couple and not putting them right in the middle of the frame is another idea. We like to call this the rule of thirds. Tip #3 Costumes are always a good way to photograph couples who are looking for that not so normal photo session, Halloween Monsters, Easter Bunny's and Mr. & Mrs. Santa are all good ways to brighten any wall. Tip #4 Outdoor photos with couples holding hands around a tree or sitting on a boulder facing each other are other great ideas for cou...
